Shalini’s story

I grew up in Kenya, and my journey into healing, dance and lifestyle coaching took me far and wide, much like a nomad exploring different paths. At 16, I ventured to India, studying Bharata Natyam, a south Indian classical dance form, first in Madras (now Chennai) and then in Poona (now Pune). Later, I studied in England and thereafter spent three transformative years studying and working in Switzerland. These experiences ignited my nomadic spirit early on.

In 1996, I settled in Surrey, England, where I built a life with my late husband Jeremy for 19 beautiful years. We cherished our holidays, but after his passing in 2016, I embarked on a different kind of journey. Packing up our home in Cranleigh, I set out to travel the world, seeking new experiences and perspectives.

I stayed in London for a time, drove a tuktuk around the island of Sri Lanka, and then travelled to Kenya where I have a small cabin in Nanyuki at the foot of Mount Kenya. I spent most of my time in Nairobi, the capital of Kenya, and was only supposed to be here for a few months, but whilst here I rediscovered love with my partner Amar (the other half of The Coaching Couple), rekindling a childhood connection into a deep romance.

Together, we share a passion for exploring, trying new things, and embracing life’s adventures. Our journey took an unexpected turn with the onset of Covid-19, grounding us in Kenya, where we’ve chosen to stay and build our life together.

Returning to Kenya in my 40s was a profound shift, navigating through changes and challenges while rediscovering the country I call home. I was so used to life in the UK and how things operated there. Kenya had also changed dramatically in the 23 years since I had last lived here. It felt like I was learning things all over again. I share this in other blogposts – my experiences, learnings, challenges and joys of moving back to Kenya and living here.

As Amar and I continue to forge a life together, we realise more and more that we want to live an unconventional life, unhampered by the daily constraints of modern living. This is of course not always easy as we have work to do, bills to pay and friends and family to consider. But we are navigating around those – and over the next few weeks, months, years we will share our experiences, thoughts, feelings and frustrations as we continue to chart our path through this crazy, exciting rollercoaster called life.

If this unconventional approach to life resonates with you, join us on our journey of discovery, growth, and living life to the fullest. We are excited to share this ride with you!

Until next time, stay inspired!

Shalini
